Miracles
Don't miss the miracle of the day. There is always one. But, you might miss seeing it if you stare at your phone too long or stop listening to the person next to you. Not that your phone isn't a modern-day miracle. But, people are much more interesting for these daily occurrences of "Wow!"
Don't believe me?
I almost missed my miracle today. I had been listening to my middle son rant--again and again with increasing rapidity and repetition--about subjects we discussed yesterday, the day before, weeks before, maybe even a year ago. But, for him, it is always yesterday. Once again, I reminded him that I want to hear his stories. Just not at the volume and intensity he was telling them at the time. In any case, I encouraged him to talk with me as calmly as possible, let the rest go, and please carry in his McDonalds bags from the car.
When he entered the house, he asked his younger brother, "What do you do when someone at karate hurts your feelings or is doing something wrong?"
"I stay calm and mostly just ignore it," said my youngest.
After a few minutes, the question was posed to me.
"I try to talk it out with the other person," I said. "But, if that doesn't work, I guess we go our separate ways."
"Which you hate," said my youngest.
"Yes," I conceded.
"Thanks for lunch, Mom."
So, did you catch the miracle?
My youngest son and I did. In fact, we caught each other's gazes over the question from my middle son, that articulate inquiry from my adult child with ASD.
It sparked a hope I didn't have earlier. It was a hope of more conversations like this one. But, not just that. It was a hope for my own question surrounding my own answer. A few hours earlier, I didn't have much hope for a resolution.
After our daily miracle, I found myself believing again.
